ZONING: HOW ENUGU EAST LOST THE RIGHT
For a long time, the most popular political discuss in Enugu State has being zoning or not zoning in the 2023 governorship race. Currently this has degenerated to the usual wasteful and needless endorsement or the so called Vote of Confidence across the local governments.
While Enugu West rightly claimed that it has only tested the coveted seat for once since 1979 and therefor deserves a second chance ; Enugu East Senatorial Zone which has occupied the Lion Building for three times since 1979 demands to have the position for the 4th time while Enugu North Senatorial Zone which has occupied once and is currently occupying the Lion Building maintained-that they want the position for a third time. But which of these zones is correct ? Take a look at what actually happened and see while we are where we are today. Be the Judge yourself.
In 1998/99, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State headed by Chief Jim Nwobodo and Dr. Okwy Nwodo the National Secretary and also a former Governor like Jim both agreed that it is the turn of Enugu West Senatorial Zone to produce the governor of Enugu State. This consensus agreement was based on the fact that Enugu Senatorial Zone has produced two governors in Chief Jim Nwaobodo and Chief C . C. Onoh while Dr Okwy Nwodo have served as governor from Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
Based on this agreement Chief Jim Nwobodo went for Dr. Cyril Okay Igwe from Ihe in Awgu Local Government while Dr Okwy Nwodo went for Chief Nduka Agu fro Ngwo Uno in Udi local government all in Enugu West. As the game was on, the INEC fixed local government election to come before the governorship election.
During the local government election somebody was killed at Dr. Okay Igwe's house in Ihe. As a result of this incident Dr. Igwe was arrested and detained ; this was the beginning of the trouble for Greater Awgu people. As Dr. Igwe remained in detention some prominent people from Enugu East made sure that Dr Igwe remains in detention.
Following this, Jim became frustrated and decided to go for Dr. Silas Ilo from Oji River Local Government. However the choice of Dr. Iloh did not fly as three very prominent personalities from Enugu East prevailed on Jim to use the opportunity of Dr. Igwe's incarceration to produce another Nkanu man as governor. Jim initially refused but when the pressure so much he caved in and succumbed.
Having been forced him to abandon Enugu West, Jim went for one Dr. Richard Nnamani but again the cabals refused claiming that Dr. Richard Nnamani is from the same Amechi with him (Jim). Following this Jim now went Dr. Chimaruoke Nnamani. He now leveraged on his relationship with Chief Solomon Lar ( then National Chairman of PDP) to produce Chimaruoke as PDP governorship candidate and then eventually the governor of Enugu State. This was how some people form Enugu East thwarted the zoning arrangement in PDP.
So which zone is entitled to Lion building in 2023 ?
For Yours Sincerely, those who wants to go to EQUITY MUST GO with CLEAN HANDS. The measure you GIVE is the measure you GET. All these show of shame in the council areas in what ever name or guise is unnecessary and complete waste of public resources.What is the reward for disobedience ?
