SEVEN MAJOR REASONS WHY I SUPPORT A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER; PROFESSOR IKE EKWEREMADU,
Transformational leadership dynamics replaces command with listening, indifference with curiosity, and control with trust. A transformational Leader learn from the past experiences but lead from the future by creative imagination, exploration and sensing changing times, seasons and our world. Such leader maintains enough humility to bring on board experts who are committed to his vision & mission of the future he imagines for his or her people and society.
Sincerely this is the kind of Leadership Enugu State need now. It should not matter to any us where such a transformational leader may come from. If we fix Enugu State, South East will be re-born for better. Better Enugu will help re-invent the small dot. The core of the small dot is Enugu, we need to understand that.
If you follow closely, the exploit of Prof. Ike Ekweremadu, since his representation of Enugu West in the Red Chambers, the followings are obviously evidence of his transformational leadership qualities:
1. On security, he was ahead of the whole country by sponsoring a bill on decentralizing our policing command and infrastructure since 2008 when it was like a taboo to speak on such matters. Today everyone is talking about Regional, State and community policing. On constitutional amendments, he has been leading the agitation and work on constitutional reviews and amendments. He has worked so hard in such committees at National Assembly and is still committing talent, time and resources in this process. The issues he raised many years ago are now what everyone is talking about in the ongoing hearings for constitution review.
2. He focused on attracting and building basic socioeconomic infrastructures that are proven to organically accelerate economic growth and human wellbeing in his primary constituency and even beyond. Portable water supply, Road networks, Power (electricity) infrastructure and actual supply systems. His empowerment of the women and the youth is a well calculated attempt to build a sustainable future economic growth for his people because when you empower a woman, she empowers a family. Therefore empowering women is empowering our communities.
3. I also noticed that the Senator gave special attention to human development, attracting educational projects and actually building schools, computer centres and vocational centres for his people. He uses his opportunities in National Assembly to inject many people into lush jobs, political positions in all arms of the government. I am yet to see a politician that can be said to have given Ndi-Enugu access into Federal and International Jobs like the Senator. IKEOHA FOUNDATION scholarships knew no boundaries of Enugu State. It was open to all of us. Lives were changed.
4. In that chambers, he has stood tall and strong to protect and prevent every attempt to mortgage the future of the Eastern Region than anyone in Nigeria’s political history. It is not an accident or by chance that no major project in Enugu was funded by questionable Federal foreign loans, including Enugu International Airport. Someone was keeping the gate and saying no to such traps! He saw the future impact and implication of such loans.
5. His political mentorship of young people is transformational. As I can see, he may be the only Senator that has his former Personal Assistants years back are now in different legislative Chambers in the States and Federal and occupying exulted political offices. He raises future leaders and do not wish to have perpetual servants like is often seen with many other politicians.
6. With these humongous achievements nationally and internationally, he has remained relatively simple, humble and meek. His attitude and capacity to listen to what you have to say is huge. When he hears a better argument, he would usually ask, so how can we apply this idea for betterment of the people.
7. I consider the Senator Wealthy. Note that I said wealthy and not rich! These are two different issues. With such endowment, he still maintains friendship and touch with the ordinary people. It is one flame of Saintly life to be this big, connected and endowed yet we can all agree to his humility and deep practice of core faith - love and forgiveness.
The next time you accuse me of blindly following IKEOHA train, please remember my reasons here. If you have a better candidate, please name them here or advise me privately. It is my view that the most competent, most prepared and most willing person should lead Enugu into this new era of economic and security difficulties. Ikeoha will get Enugu back on track.
