The meeting, held yesterday, October 16, 2024, at the Local Government Secretariat in Obollo Afor, aimed to foster collaboration and address pressing issues faced by persons with disabilities in the area.

The delegation was led by Vice Chairman Emmanuel Eze in the absence of Chairman Onyebuchi Eze, who could not attend due to unforeseen circumstances. The five-member team also included Secretary Modesta Onyinye Ugwu and Treasurer Uzoamaka Emelum, each demonstrating a strong commitment to advocating for the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities in government.

During the meeting, the Association expressed their support for the current administration led by Aka Eze Aka, acknowledging the importance of collaboration between the government and disability advocacy groups to enhance the well-being of all citizens. They emphasized the pressing need for increased employment opportunities within the local government for individuals with disabilities.

“We are passionate about contributing our skills and talents to our community,” Vice Chairman Emmanuel Eze said. “We respectfully request that you consider us for job openings that may arise in the Local Government.”

In response, Executive Chairman Akachukwu Eze Akachukwu , accompanied by his Deputy — Hon. Mrs. Onyinye Odoh, Hon. Onyekachi C Ugwu as well as his Chief of staff — Dr. Jude Okwudili, commended the members of JONAPWD for their determination and resilience, asserting that their physical challenges should not hinder their ability or zeal to contribute meaningfully to society. He highlighted the mantra that there is “ability in disability,” reinforcing the notion that our communities and government at all levels should recognize and harness the potential of persons with disabilities.

Aka further made a significant announcement regarding skills development, promising the delegates a slot in Governor Peter Mbah’s skill acquisition program at the Rehabilitation Center in Enugu. He encouraged them to nominate one of their members to benefit from this opportunity, further demonstrating his commitment to empowering persons with disabilities in Udenu.

The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, with both the Association and the Executive Chairman expressing optimism for future collaborations. The initiatives proposed aim not only to uplift the economic capabilities of individuals with disabilities but also to foster a more inclusive community.

The visit by the JONAPWD Udenu Chapter signifies a crucial step toward addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by persons with disabilities, ensuring their rightful place as active contributors to society. As both parties explore avenues for collaboration, it is clear that dialogues like these pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable Udenu Local Government Area.
