OF LEADERSHIP, IKEOHA AND ENUGU STATE -
AN OP-ED by OGBUEFI EMMANUEL NNANNA EZIMA (Amagu, Okpanku)

I've been thinking a lot about Enugu State. For 27yrs, I lived in Lagos and other parts of the West, then made a decision to return to my state permanently, this beautiful idyllic Coal City State. Enugu, sprawling in majestic posture, ensconced in undulations, quiet, vegetative; with that ability to help you tap into your inner self. At least this used to be Enugu. Sadly not anymore.

The glory of this beautiful state has been corroded by sinister politics. The economics and enterprise of the state has also been dealt a huge blow as a result of terrible governance. Can we point to a single sector that has developed in capacity to attract investments, jobs, economic growth, and all the other indices of a prosperous state?

Security has collapsed, the state governor has himself barricaded and all roads leading to the government house restricted. Just like Nigeria, Enugu is in limbo. How sad!

This is the Enugu I decided to relocate to. I'm asking myself, have i not made a terrible judgement to think I could come here and make a difference? Yet I believe *VERY STRONGLY* that not only i but together we can make a difference in this our beloved state.

Everything rises and falls on leadership. That is why choosing who will lead Enugu in the next election is going to be a make or break.

I have looked at all the candidates who are currently palpitating towards the elevated office. I give all of them the respect they deserve seeing as it takes a Lion heart to dare to try. However from a hindsight, foresight, aerial-sight, I believe very strongly that the only candidate *(should he choose to run)* with the experience, stature, capacity, capability, knowledge, wisdom, sagacity, heart, and gumption to turn Enugu around into a prosperous, viable, secure, and solid 360° state is *Senator (Prof) Ike Ekweremadu*.

I chose the above appellations to qualify him very carefully and thoughtfully as those who know me know I'm not one to bandy words carelessly.

A good leader especially in the governance of public office, should have the ability to holistically secure people and property, secure conducive environment for investors to get excited, create jobs jobs jobs, explore the intellectual sector, make education a cardinal priority, ensure economic prosperity, make the state a Jerusalem for healthcare, build infrastructure, improve electricity, and so on. Any leader that can make visible, measurable effort at these things would be smiled upon by posterity.

I have no doubts that if we are lucky enough to have Senator Ekweremadu govern this state, he will make our dear state attractive for ndị Enugu, ndi Igbo and ndi ocha 😊 (ndi ocha can bring their money to the state).

I have high hopes that there's light at the end of the tunnel. But If the good senator decides not to run (hope not) we will give our very best as a people to ensure that whomever occupies the lion building, has all the support necessary to turn the ship of this state around.

Let's not only return our glory days, let's be true to who we really are - those living on top of the hill - Enu'gwu

God bless Enugu
