Just Concluded Witchcraft Conference

THE CONFERENCE, THE CONTROVERSY AND THE CONFUSION

The university community of University of Nigeria since three days ago has been in chaos over a controversial conference slated for 26-27 of November. A conference on witchcraft? It did not go down well with several fanatics. However, I do not blame them.

Witchcraft, whether we believe it or not, make up the worldview of the average African. The presence of witches and wizards are real. Besides, most of them have identified themselves with the public. In 2015, the Association of Witches and Wizards of Nigeria endorsed Goodluck Jonathan for his reelection. This aspect of our worldview has suffered misconceptions, labelling and derogation. I am not advocating for the group. I am Anglican. 

Nonetheless, the study of witchcraft is an unexplored pedagogy, and in many ways I applaud the organizers. In the Caribbeans and south side of the United States, voodoo and hoodoo are trending discourses. In East Africa, especially Kenya, the study of witchcraft is not new.

Furthermore, witchcraft goes beyond people gathering in a coven or people with pointed hats and brooms flying at nights. Witchcraft is when an aspiring political office holder promises the poor masses good education, stable electricity, and good health, only to renege on his promise as soon as he emerge victorious. Witchcraft is when you victimize students as a teacher. Witchcraft is when you take your relative's daughter to city with promise of a good education only for her to be slaving year in year out for you. Witchcraft is when you exploit those who work for you. Witchcraft is when our politicians feed on the destinies of the young by denying them opportunities to blossom. Witchcraft is when you hoard growth-oriented information to yourself, so as to remain on top of your peers, rather than sharing. Witchcraft is when you cheat on your spouse. Witchcraft is when you support yahoo and other advance fee fraud. Witchcraft is countless.

To this end, University of Nigeria will forever be at loss if this conference is cancelled. This is a brainstorming pedagogy that deserves attention, sponsorship and endorsement.

Enugu Community in crisis as Ministry of Local government Rural Development and chieftaincy Affairs issued certificates of Return/Recognition to Candidates without Elections. Nkpunato-Nkpologu Autonomous Community  in Uzo-uwani LGA is in crisis and in complete dilemma as the Ministry of Local government Rural Development and chieftaincy Affairs headed by Hon Deacon Okey Ogbodo arbitrarily recognized  Candidates without Elections.  News media agency confirmed this ugly incident on Monday through the outgoing President General, Chief Barr A.A Onyeji.
